What Does It Block?
These Categories Are Always Filtered For Everyone
Pornography & Recreational Nudity
Pornography refers to any content containing bare breasts or genitalia in a photo, drawing, or other sexual depiction. Recreational nudity includes naturism, streaking, and other unclothed or see-through clothing activities.
Criminal Activity
Criminal activity includes, but is not necessarily limited to, hacking or cracking, hate speech, illegal drug promotion, illegal weapons, and crime instructions.
Adult Material
Websites and/or applications intended for an adult audience or content that is not specifically designed for viewing pornography, but may serve as a gateway to such material. This category also contains websites that are considered crude and tasteless.
You Can Choose These Categories As A Parent

Search Sites
Internet related websites and/or applications that search or index any portion of the Internet.

This category has language translation and anonymous proxy servers. These types of websites can be used to bypass content filtering.

Audio/ Image/ Video File Sharing
This category includes peer-to-peer sharing websites such as KaZaa.

Anything pertaining to the well being of a living body.
Media Search
This category includes image, video and audio directory searches. Websites like Google Images would be included in the Media Search category. Access to pornography can be prevalent if this category is not selected.

Compare and Decide
The Netmop filter can stand on its own merits, so there is no need to bash the competition. However, our experts agree that due to common misinformation among filtering technology providers we have a responsibility to help educate consumers about the problems with various Internet filtering solutions.
Password Overrides
The first problem that other filtering technologies have is that they are specifically designed to protect only children. They all allow an override password and it is up to the parents to guard this password. There is really no level of protection for the parents themselves. An enterprising young person can quickly find out about spy-ware that will capture and save as you type in this password.
Home vs. Libraries, Schools and Businesses
The second problem that other filtering technologies have is that they are usually designed for the lucrative library, school, and business markets. This requires more complicated setup and features. The software must conform to government regulations, not to what you want as a parent. For example, libraries cannot legally filter some content that you may not want in your home.
ISP/Server Based Filters
Examples: AOL Parental Controls, Bess, SmartFilter, WebSENSE, and I-Gear
ISP based filters are deceptively simple. You just tell your ISP that you want your Internet filtered, and voila you are supposed to be protected. This assumes that the only way to access the Internet is through that ISP, and that the only bad content on the Internet is from web pages.
It is very easy to dial around an ISP based filter. For instance, if you use AOL Parental Controls it is very easy for someone to install a trial version of MSN and use it without filtering. Also, there are far more quick and simple methods to get to destructive content from the Internet than just web pages such as news groups, file sharing (e.g. KaZaa), etc.
Another common problem with ISP based filters is that they often times dramatically slow down your Internet connection speed because the ISP has to proxy all of the web pages through a single funnel.
Client Based Filters
Examples: Net Nanny, Cyber Patrol, CYBERsitter, SurfWatch, X-Stop.
These are the traditional software filter programs that you may find in a software store or online. They tout that there are no ongoing subscription fees. What that really means is that you have purchased a software program that has been sitting on a shelf and is most likely already out of date. Then they will sell you support often in the $10-$20 range per incident. Then, when they have upgraded their software to match the new security problems that arise on the Internet they will try to sell you their latest upgraded version.
Most client based filters are now advanced enough to keep their bad site lists updated regularly, but the problem comes in when a new method becomes available to distribute objectionable content via the Internet, such as KaZaa. These companies have long since left you to move on to the next customer at that point, but they will be glad to sell you the updated version that will protect you when it arrives in stores 6 months later.
Perhaps one of the most alarming issues with these products is that they are easily circumvented or disabled. In fact there are organizations whose mission it is to do so in the name of free speech. For instance www.cexx.org has instructions on how to disable all of the above-mentioned programs and more.

12) Do I have to have a particular type of connection to the Internet?
13) What browsers are supported?
14) Do I have to switch my Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
15) Will Netmop work with other filters?
1) Can I still use Instant Chat software?
Yes. We also recognize that when used responsibly, Instant Messaging programs such as ICQ and AOL's Instant Messenger are very useful. In addition, by utilizing the built in functions that come with these programs along with some common sense, they can be very safe.
2) Do you filter newsgroups? (NNTP Usenet)
Yes. Newsgroups are NOT traditional news mediums such as NBC, CBS, and CNN. Newsgroups are better described as a worldwide bulletin board. While newsgroups are being used less and less by the average users, some people still use newsgroups, especially for research. Many filtered ISPs and filtering products overlook newsgroups. Netmop allows access to mainstream newsgroups, while blocking access to newsgroups that are primarily built on pornography and illegal content.
3) Does Netmop Work on a Macintosh?
The current version of Netmop is a Windows Filterpak. Unfortunately, we do not have a Macintosh/Apple version. There may be a Filterpak for Mac in the future, but currently no development for one.
4) How does the filtering work?
In short, the Netmop software installs on your computer, which monitors all website requests on your computer, and checks each one with our filtering servers to see if the website is on our list of blocked sites. If the site is on our list, your website request is denied. If the site is not on our list, your request is allowed to be sent out to the Internet for normal processing.
5) How much does it cost?
You can get Netmop filtering service for as little as $4.50 per month. See our Try/Buy page for all of the details.
6) I live outside the US, can I use Netmop?
Most certainly, YES! Netmop is a software that's downloaded directly to your computer, and will work on the World Wide Web. We currently only offer support in English, but anyone in the world can enjoy clean internet with Netmop!
7) What criteria do you use when blocking a site?
Netmop only blocks those sites with pornographic or recreational nudity, sexually explicit language, or criminal activity. Criminal activity includes, but is not necessarily limited to, hate speech, wagering, drug promotion, illegal weapons construction/modification/sales, and crime instructions.
8) Will the filtering slow down my Internet access?
Not perceptibly. The filtering process takes a fraction of a second, so you should not notice any difference in your Internet speed. If you do see a significant lag, you should check the support knowledge base for troubleshooting tips.
9) Will users be able to play multi-player games or use ICQ?
Yes. Internet connections that do not use a browser, such as multi-player games or ICQ, are not routed through our servers. This means you may have safe web access and still enjoy other online activities.
10) What is the NetMop filter?
NetMop Filterpak is an advanced internet filtering software that works extremely well and is very affordable. Simply sign up, download and install the software, and forget about it. It is a great way to protect yourself and your family.
11) What operating systems does Netmop work with?
Windows 95, 98, NT 4, 2000, ME and XP. Netmop does NOT work with Apple, WebTV, or Linux.
12) Do I have to have a particular type of connection to the Internet?
No, Netmop works with any Internet connection type including dial-up modems and high-speed access such as DSL, ISDN, cable modems, and LANs (without slowing them down!).
13) What browsers are supported?
Netmop is compatible with all versions of any Internet browser including Internet Explorer, Netscape, AOL, and Mozilla, and Opera.
14) Do I have to switch my Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
No. Netmop works with all ISPs including AOL, MSN, Earthlink, Compuserve, Prodigy Juno, Netzero, etc.
15) Will Netmop work with other filters?
Netmop will improve ISP and server based filtering software such as AOL Parental Controls, but it will NOT work with client side filters such as NetNanny, etc.
